About John


John Gosden is a racehorse trainer. He has won over 3,000 races around the world, including over 100 Group 1s (Grade 1s), in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

He trains at Clarehaven Stables in Newmarket.

Early Life

John grew up near Eastbourne, Sussex, south of London. After graduating from Cambridge University, he became an assistant to champion trainer Sir Noel Murless. He then became an assistant to champion trainer Vincent O’Brien. During this time O’Brien was training many of his finest horses of his career, including The Minstrel, Alleged, Be My Guest and Try My Best. John then moved to California and began training for himself.



California

John trained over 500 winners during his time in California, including champion Bates Motel, who won the San Antonio Handicap, the Santa Anita Handicap, and the Philip H. Iselin Handicap. Bates Motel also went on to win an Eclipse Award.

Soon after, John trained Royal Heroine, who won the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Gamely Stakes, and an Eclipse Award. In the following years, John won the Yellow Ribbon Stakes twice, the Hollywood Turf Cup three times, the Matriach Stakes twice, the Ramona Handicap twice, the San Luis Rey Handicap, and the Vanity Handicap twice.

He returned to England in 1989 to train at the renowned Stanley House Stables.

England

John has trained over 3,000 winners in England, Europe and America, including the Epsom Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Golden Horn, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Raven’s Pass, the Epsom Oaks and King George VI Stakes winner Taghrooda, the Epsom Derby winner Benny the Dip, and the Dubai Sheema Classic winners Dar Re Mi and Jack Hobbs.

John has won over 40 races at Royal Ascot, including the Prince of Wales’s Stakes three times, the St. James's Palace Stakes with Kingman and the Golden Jubilee Stakes with Malhub.

He has also won the 1000 Guineas with Lahan, the St. Leger Stakes four times, the Fillie’s Mile four times, the Coronation Stakes twice with Nannina and Fallen for You, the July Cup with Oasis Dream and the Nunthorpe Stakes.

John has also trained the winners of the Lockinge Stakes twice, the Nassau Stakes four times, the Yorkshire Oaks twice, the Falmouth Stakes twice, the Middle Park Stakes, the Sun Chariot Stakes, and the Cheveley Park Stakes.

In Ireland, John has won the Irish Champion Stakes twice, the Irish 2000 Guineas, the Irish Oaks with Great Heavens, the Matron Stakes with Rainbow View, the Irish St. Leger twice, and the Pretty Polly Stakes three times.

John has also won a large number of races in France, including the Prix Rothschild twice with Elusive Kate, the Prix Jaques le Marois, the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, the Prix d’Ispahan, the Prix Jean Prat, the Prix de la Foret twice, the Prix Marcel Boussac three times and the Prix de Diane.

In Italy, John has won the Gran Premio del Jockey Club with Shantou, the Premio Presidente della Republica the Premio Roma twice, and the Gran Premio di Milano twice.

John has won major races in the Americas, Middle East, Asia and Australia, including the Dubai Sheema Classic with Dar Re Mi and Jack Hobbs, the Arlington Million with Debussy, and the Breeders Cup’ Juvenile Turf twice, with Donativum and Pounced.
